Why have a website?

Why have a website?

2022-08-22

As I was thinking about updating this site, I briefly considered whether or not spending time on this was worth it.

I didn’t have this project on my current computer, so I’d have to find the source code, familiarize myself with the code base again, etc. If all I want to do is post photos, I could just go and add them to Flickr, after all. Then I thought to myself, “What if I want to make a text post – I can’t do that on Flickr”. In that case, using a traditional blogging platform could be the way to go – Tumblr, Wordpress, etc.

Finally, I decided to keep doing things the manual way. I don’t have to worry about the whims of the various platform owners due to their changing economic fortunes. I don’t have to worry about NatSec issues either. It’s hard to imagine there was a time where personal websites were ubiquitous but here we are. From HTML files to Geocities to RSS readers to the platforms we know and love today.

Health & Beauty played an acoustic, emotionally punishing version of Sonic Youth’s “Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style.” Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s a recorded version on his Bandcamp but check him out anyway. Update: found a clip, starts below at 37:40
